News From 1979 On March 28th, America's worst commercial nuclear accident occurred inside the Unit Two reactor at the Three Mile Island plant near Middletown, Pennsylvania. On June 11th, actor John Wayne died at age 72. On July 11th, the abandoned US space station "Skylab" made a spectacular return to Earth, burning up in the atmosphere and showering debris over the Indian Ocean and Australia. On November 4th, the Iranian hostage crisis began as militants stormed the United States Embassy in Tehran. For some of the hostages, it was the start of 444 days of captivity. On December 3rd, eleven people were killed in a crush of fans at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum, where the British rock group The Who was performing. Also this year, SONY introduces the Walkman radio.
